Ceramic

Ustad Mir Alam Honariar and two other ustads work with artisan students from the village of Istalif, training them to improve the materials and quality of their traditional pots.

Ustad Honariar was born in Farah Province in Afghanistan.  As a young man he was given an opportunity to study in Kabul.  He spoke only Pashto and had difficulty getting through school in Dari.  He therefore elected to follow a technical field of study, and went to the Senai School to pursue ceramics.  He had the opportunity to study in Germany, and now speaks fluent German. Ustad Honariar survived many hardships and wars while remaining a ceramicist and making a living from his craft. He has received many awards for his art from the government of Zahir Shah and the communist government of Afghanistan. More recently, the Turquoise Mountain Foundation has exhibited his work.  He is most proud that he has been involved in the development of the ancient art of Afghan ceramics.
