Embroidery

The history and ethnic diversity of Afghanistan have given rise to a great variety of embroidery techniques, many of which can still be seen today. Each region has specific embroidery designs used for decorating coats, dresses, hats, tents, homes and other objects used in daily life.

The Uzbeks and Tajiks of the North produce stunning bedspreads and other items with large embroidered flowers. The Hazaras of the central highlands often work in geometric designs. Within each regional style, individual families embroider variations on established themes, adding their own originality and imagination.

Afghan embroidery is characterized by ancestral patterns and a highly developed sense of composition. The threads most used are multicolored silks, silver and gold.

Many Afghan women are able to earn income for their families with their embroidery. Artisan groups in rural and urban communities work with women embroiderers to develop their skills and reach new markets.
