Jali Screen

Lattice-work or “jali” woodwork was originally used in the windows of Kabuli palaces and mansions to let in light while preserving the privacy of the household. The craftsmen use slender slivers of wood, laid in delicate joints, to form hundreds of different geometric patterns, combining motifs from the ancient Middle east and Mughal India. A panel can take weeks to create. Here the ancient tradition has been reinterpreted to provide spectacular hand-crafted geometric silhouettes for light.
