Carved Door

This door has been carved for the Panjtan Shrine, at the entrance to the Old Bazaar of Murad Khane in Kabul. As part of our regeneration efforts in the area, master carvers from the Turquoise Mountain Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture have fashioned new doors of Himalayan cedar for the shrine.

The door and their frame are carved in classic or Kabuli style. They feature flowing floral motifs and calligraphic script, examples of the intersection of Persian, Mughal, and European influences with Afghan art traditions.  capitals echo the Hellenistic style brought to Nuristan by the armies of Alexander the Great.
