The chess pieces in the Turquoise Mountain collection are replicas of statues in the Kabul National Museum. The original statues are six feet tall and represent ancestor deities of the now vanished religion of northeastern Afghanistan. The figures and board are carved from Afghan walnut wood from the province of Nangarhar and cedar from the Nuristani heartland.
